Our History

The Badenhausen Branch Library of the Massena Public Library, in the former Boothe Hardware Store in downtown Brasher Falls, opened its doors on December 11th, 2014. The facility is named in honor of Dr. D. Susan Badenhausen, a retired physician, who is donating $56,000 a year for at least 3 years for the library. Dr. Badenhausen, who started work in the Tri-Town area in 1977, is a shareholder in St. Regis Reality Inc., the group working on the revitalization of the downtown corridor.

Dr. Badenhausen's donation paid for books, DVDs, magazines and newspapers, supplies, furnishings, and staffing. It also covered the cost of the renovation project, in which the contractor donated half his time. The work included refinishing floors and shelves for the library's collections, creating a computer corner, constructing a dedicated children's room and creating a reading area with shelving for newspapers and magazines. The North Country Library System provided discounted computers for a dedicated computer center, and Slic Networks Solutions, Nicholville, donated the installation of the network hookup for computers. The Tri-Town Chamber of Commerce agreed to lease a copier/fax/scanner, including toner and maintenance, to the library for free for three years. The library will pay only for the paper it uses. In addition, other small libraries from around the region donated extra paperback carousels, and one library, which recently purchased a new book drop, donated its old one to the Badenhausen Branch. Don Holland from Colton knocked down his price in making the outdoor signs that welcome visitors to the Badenhausen Library, as well as indoor signs that creatively beckon younger patrons with the messages of "Computer Geeks Welcome" and "Book Worms Welcome".

Thanks to Dr. Badenhausen and those who have been involved with the project, the library now has a Friends of the Library group that consists of about 30 people. Anyone who wants to get involved with the library is welcome to join the Friends of the Badenhausen Branch Library.
